Getting a Greek Tax Number (AFM) from Australia

What's Happening

If you live in Australia and have property in Greece, or expect to inherit some, you'll almost certainly need a Greek tax number, called an AFM. The good news: you don't need to travel to Greece to get one, and applying is free.

Why It Matters for You

Without an AFM, almost nothing else can move. You'll need one for everything from accepting an inheritance to paying ENFIA property tax or eventually selling. Each person involved usually needs their own, so if three siblings inherit a home, each typically needs an AFM.

How Australians Can Get One

  1. Apply yourself online through the Greek tax office, including a video call to confirm your identity.
  2. Have a qualified Greek lawyer apply for you under a Power of Attorney, signed here through the Greek Consulate. See signing a Greek Power of Attorney in Australia.

What to Do

Check whether each family member already has an AFM. Some may already have one from years ago.

If the AFM is one piece of a bigger property or inheritance matter, a Property Clarity Session is the simplest first step. GPP coordinates with the qualified Greek legal practice we work with, based in Greece, so you know what's needed for your situation.
